Luang Prabang has the 'small town' feel of South East Asia dialed. We have been here for 7 days already and loved every minute. This city has great restaurants, cafes and lounge/bar options. Outside of the city there are unbelievable waterfalls, hikes and scenery. This would have to be one of our favourite non beach/surf related places in SEA. There are young Buddhist Monks walking around town which adds rich colour and peacefulness. The town shuts down around midnight due to curfew which is nice because it leaves the party scene in Vang Vieng. Every night there is a lively night market to buy local stuff and it is all smiles.
We spent the first couple days walking and biking around town. It is hot (and I mean hot, like close to 40 degrees Celsius) during the day so shady cafes are the place to be. We shuffled our accommodation around on the third night to a cheaper but more comfortable option in the heart of the city called Norasingh. Our dinners have ranged from simple and tasty rice noodle soups by the market to an extravagant feast at Blue Lagoon where I took Laura out. We can't be living on the cheap all the time. It is nice when the head chef comes out to see how the meal was and I knew we were doing well when the Swiss owner came out to see how we were enjoying everything. Then again we had wine, appy, main, brandy and a delicious Cuban.
On the same night as Blue Lagoon, we had made friends with some of the employees at a couple cafes and they invited us to their local night club - Dao Fa. I treated them to everything and we had a blast. It has also made the last couple of days more fun because they will come running out of the cafes to talk with me and joke around a bit. We all had a lot of fun but paid slightly for it the next day.
On the adventure side we decided to bike to the small waterfall Tad Sea about 15km away. We rented mountain bikes and headed out around 10am. Words can't describe the beauty of these falls. You take a cruise down the river, then hike up a little bit to find elephants crossing the falls and kids (including myself) playing in the refreshing water. They had swings, ziplines and cold beer which also added to our excitement. It was worth the trip even though only 10 minutes into our return journey I snapped my chain. Luckily it was mostly downhill the way home.
The next waterfall we went to was yesterday which we hired a tuk tuk because it was 30km away. It was a bigger waterfall and just as beautiful as the small one but more touristy.
We have a few days left and they will be spent lounging and possibly a few more adventures. No complaints just good living!
Laura's Little Notes:
Where to Eat (day time):
Scandinavian Bakery for the cheap, cheap but yum sandwiches and banana shakes
Art House Cafe doesn't have the fastest service, it's actually quite slow but the place is super cute, the owner is lovely and it's a great place to get lost in a book
JoMa Bakery also for their make-your-own sandwiches. The Reuben is also a hit. Their coffee is delish and the sweets selection is divine! Great Wifi too. Actually here at the moment
Utopia has the best location and the funkiest vibe in L.P. Their menu selection is also to die for. The burger and shakes are legit and the breakfasts are huge with the freshest/tastiest ingredients. A must visit
Where to Eat (night time):
The Night Market has way too much food. You could eat there every night. The Lao sandwich is safe and a hit. The bbq river fish was a KJ fav and everything is under $2. What a deal!
Utopia (same as above) but go at night again for the vibe. Such a cool place.
Hive has great music, hip hop nights with dance performances and cheap drinks. Wouldn't recommend their pizza but the chicken fajitas was good
Lao Lao has the most incredible Lao bbq. It's a cross between a fondue and Korean bbq. You will sweat your brains out while cooking but it's so much fun. Dan even ate an additional tray of water buffalo to himself. A must try (the bbq, not necessary the tray to yourself)
Blue Lagoon for a romantic dinner. Get your man to treat you
